Jesuits’ Church in Valletta Officially Reopens Following Major Restoration Project

Historic landmark restored through a multi-year collaboration between national authorities, the Jesuits’ Church Foundation and AX Construction

The Jesuits’ Church in Valletta has officially reopened to the public following an extensive restoration project aimed at returning the historic landmark to its original glory. The reopening was announced during a press conference held today by National Heritage Minister Owen Bonnici.

The press conference brought together key stakeholders involved in the project, including Ms. Denise Xuereb, Director of Construction and Development at AX Group; Mr. Fabio Billi, Restoration Manager at AX Construction; Father Nicholas Doublet, Rector of the Jesuits’ Church Foundation; and Mr. Mark Azzopardi, Director (Projects) within the Restoration and Preservation Department.

Restoration works on the Jesuits’ Church commenced in 2021 and focused on preserving the church’s rich artistic patrimony while strengthening its structural integrity. The project was spearheaded through a close collaboration between AX Construction, the Jesuits’ Church Foundation and the Restoration Directorate, with works extending to both the church and its adjoining oratories. In 2024, restoration works on the adjoining oratories; the Oratory of the Immaculate Conception, the Onorati Oratory, and the sacristy were completed, marking important milestones in the conservation of this historic site.

Speaking during the press conference, National Heritage Minister Owen Bonnici said that the five-million-euro restoration project, funded entirely through national funds, reflects Malta’s determination to safeguard its cultural heritage and ensure that historically significant buildings continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

The Jesuits’ Church is one of Valletta’s oldest churches and among the largest in Malta. Built between 1593 and 1609 by the Society of Jesus, the church is renowned for its architectural evolution and its rich artistic and historical significance.

Commenting on AX Construction’s involvement in the project, Ms. Denise Xuereb said that “from the very start, AX Construction has been at the forefront of innovative and pioneering techniques and technologies in construction and restoration.” She explained that “this commitment to balancing legacy with innovation allows us to fulfil our mission of Building our Future, Restoring our Heritage.”

Ms. Xuereb added that “the restoration of the Jesuits’ Church was not just about preserving a building; it was about safeguarding a piece of our nation’s history for future generations.”
