The Verdala Terraces and Verdala Wellness Hotel

Since the demolition of the old Grand Hotel Verdala began in late 2021, works progressed at a sustained pace, culminating in the successful delivery of the Verdala destination. The residential blocks at the Grand and Royal Mansions were brought to completion, while the Verdala Wellness Hotel was finalised and inaugurated in 2025, marking a major milestone for the wider Verdala Terraces development. Through this project, AX Construction introduced elevated levels of innovation and creativity in structural design, building materials and overall aesthetic quality within the local sector.

The build presented several interesting challenges due to the uniqueness of the exterior structure, which is comprised of a series of inclined columns designed to emulate the natural rock strata of the surrounding countryside. To maximise the longevity and integrity of the structure while utilising less concrete and materials overall, a post-tensioning method was adopted for the concrete, marking the first time this construction process was implemented in Malta in such a way. As part of its commitment to knowledge sharing, AX Construction also welcomed a group of structural engineering students from the University of Malta to the site to provide first-hand insight into the complexities of this method.

Using the latest advanced construction techniques and equipment, AX Construction spearheaded the project alongside a number of experienced partners in architecture and design. Contemporary construction approaches included the use of 6 to 7 metre-long cantilevers, full insulation and cladding across the three structures, and comprehensive soundproofing measures within roofs and walls. The completed development stands as a benchmark mixed-use destination that brings together high-end residential living and luxury wellness hospitality in Malta.
