Pathway Reconstruction at Ħaġar Qim

The pathway linking Ħaġar Qim Temples and Mnajdra Temples forms part of one of Malta’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a key visitor route within the country’s archaeological heritage landscape. AX Construction was entrusted with the reconstruction and upgrading of this historic pathway, delivering infrastructure improvements that enhance accessibility, visitor safety, and long-term site preservation.

The project involved the dismantling and rebuilding of the existing pathway, originally constructed in the 1960s, replacing deteriorated materials with a reinforced and more durable structure. Works included excavation, structural reinforcement, paving installation, levelling, and the integration of support systems designed to ensure long-term stability while minimising visual impact on the surrounding archaeological environment.

As part of the infrastructure upgrade, the pathway was widened to improve pedestrian circulation and facilitate emergency and service vehicle access between the temple sites. Additional works included the upgrading of ancillary structures, site restoration, and careful coordination with heritage authorities and archaeological specialists throughout all phases of the project.

Through this heritage restoration and civil engineering project, AX Construction continues to contribute to the preservation and accessibility of Malta’s historic landmarks, combining technical expertise, sensitive construction methods, and sustainable infrastructure solutions within culturally significant environments.
