How Does Heritage Restoration Create Places for People to Enjoy?
Malta’s historic buildings and public spaces are part of the country’s identity. Through heritage restoration and responsible construction, these landmarks can be carefully preserved while creating new opportunities for residents and visitors to experience them.
Across Valletta, AX Construction is proud to contribute to projects that not only safeguard Malta’s architectural heritage but also enhance the way people interact with some of the country’s most treasured landmarks.
Preserving St John’s Co-Cathedral for Future Generations
One of the most significant heritage projects currently underway is the St John’s Co-Cathedral New Museum Project. Alongside the restoration of the historic façade, the wider project will create new exhibition spaces, improve accessibility, and provide dedicated galleries for some of the Co-Cathedral’s most important collections, including the Flemish tapestries, silver collection, illuminated manuscripts, and the new Caravaggio Wing.
By protecting these priceless artefacts while improving the visitor experience, the project ensures that one of Malta’s most iconic landmarks can continue to educate and inspire future generations.
Restoring Places of Worship and Cultural Importance
The restoration of the Jesuits’ Church is another example of preserving an important part of Valletta’s heritage. The adjoining oratories were completed in 2024, while the main church reopened to the public in February 2026 following extensive restoration works.
Conservation efforts continue within the church, including the restoration of individual chapels and the high altar and reredos, ensuring this remarkable historic church remains both an active place of worship and a cultural landmark for years to come.
Revitalising Public Spaces
Historic public spaces also deserve careful preservation. Works have recently commenced on the restoration of the Grand Master’s Palace Fountain in St George’s Square, helping conserve another important feature of Valletta’s historic streetscape.
Once completed, the restored fountain will continue to provide residents and visitors with an attractive public space at the heart of Malta’s capital, allowing future generations to enjoy one of Valletta’s most recognisable landmarks.
Breathing New Life into Historic Buildings
Heritage restoration is not only about preserving landmarks, it is also about ensuring historic buildings continue to serve modern communities.
The restoration of Is-Suq tal-Belt transformed Valletta’s historic covered market into a vibrant destination that combines a traditional food market with a wide variety of restaurants and eateries. By respecting the building’s historic character while adapting it for modern use, the project has re-established Is-Suq tal-Belt as a lively place where residents and visitors can meet, dine, and experience the city’s unique atmosphere.
Similarly, the restoration of Rosselli – AX Privilege gave new life to a historic Valletta palazzo, transforming it into a luxury boutique hotel while opening its doors to both guests and the local community. Today, Grain Street, Grain, and Under Grain have become sought-after dining destinations, demonstrating how carefully restored heritage buildings can create memorable hospitality experiences while preserving their architectural significance.
Building a Lasting Legacy
Every heritage project is an opportunity to protect Malta’s past while creating spaces that people can enjoy today and in the future. Whether restoring a place of worship, conserving a historic façade, revitalising a public square, or transforming a landmark building for modern use, thoughtful restoration ensures that Valletta’s rich heritage remains a living part of everyday life.
At AX Construction, we are proud to deliver projects that preserve Malta’s history while creating lasting value for the communities they serve.
